Turkey Moves to Curb Alcohol Sales, 5/24/2013 – Wall Street Journal
ISTANBUL—Turkey moved to curb alcohol sales and restrict advertisements, drawing concern from global distillery giant Diageo DGE.LN +0.32% PLC and local producers, in a move likely to deepen outrage among secular Turks who accuse the government of having an Islamist agenda. The bill, which still requires presidential approval, is poised to ban retail alcohol sales between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., halt all advertising and promotion of alcohol-related products, and seeks to eradicate scenes that could be construed as encouraging consumption of alcohol from television series, movies and music videos. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cast the move as an effort to bring Turkey’s regulations in line with other advanced economies such as the U.S., which have similar curbs on alcohol sales to prevent abuse. Critics led by secular Turks say the legislative package builds on a series of limitations introduced by Mr. Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party since it swept to power in 2002, ending the staunchly secularist military’s decadeslong hold over civilian politics. Sam Adams Stands Out While Beer Sales Slump, 5/24/2013 – Wall Street Journal
Corporate Intelligence blog editor Tom Gara explains how Samuel Adams beer has bucked a trend of lower beer sales in the U.S. for the past four weeks. Wine and spirits have been outperforming beer for the past five years and the volume of beer sold in early May is down for the fourth straight year. Beer companies are shifting to more expensive beer and craft beer models to capture the premium market but Sam Adams is continuing to excel by increasing promotional spending by about 5% and dropping prices while still maintaining the aura of a small beer company. Booze-Soaked Boroughs: Two Festivals in New York Serve Up Specialty Cocktails, 5/20/2013 – Wall Street Journal
Like a subway series for cocktails, two massive and very different drinks-centric events set up camp on opposing shores of the East River this weekend. For those who like their libations with a twist of Gatsby, there was the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, the five-day festival and industry conference, which returned for a fourth year starting with a gala Friday night at the New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. Meanwhile in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, the two-year-old Great GoogaMooga offered a decidedly more dressed-down setting for tippling. The freewheeling food, drinks and music festival, which kicked off Friday night with a concert by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Flaming Lips, enlisted Flatiron Lounge co-owner Julie Reiner to curate drinks from upscale-cocktail bars like Booker & Dax, Death & Co. and Dutch Kills for its $79.50-VIP-ticket holders. Waiter, There’s a Cocktail in My Soup, 5/20/2013 – The New York Times
A while ago, struck by how similar a tomato-based gazpacho was to a Bloody Mary mix, I added vodka to the soup. Voilà: a chilled cocktail and summery first course in one. I’ve come to prefer it with reposado tequila, and I have gone on to spike other cold soups. Possibilities include white gazpacho with silver tequila and a garnish of seedless green grapes; borscht with vodka and a dollop of sour cream; carrot-pineapple soup with light rum. Also, minted green-pea soup with bourbon; cantaloupe soup with brandy or port, and potato-fennel soup with pastis or absinthe. Read more!

Anheuser-Busch’s Budweiser brand introduced a bowtie-shaped aluminum can that mirrors Budweiser’s iconic bowtie logo. The new bowtie-shaped can is available in eight-packs on store shelves nationwide. “This can is incomparable, like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” said Pat McGauley, vice president of innovation for Anheuser-Busch, in a statement. “The world’s most iconic beer brand deserves the world’s most unique and innovative can. I think we have it here.” The proprietary can, in development since 2010, is available only in the United States and will not replace the traditional Budweiser can, the company says. Read more!

He will be tasting and educating us on the Smooth Ambler and Old Scout line of Whiskeys: The Smooth Ambler Yearling, the Old Scout 6yr High Rye Bourbon & Old Scout 7yr Rye. This will also be the official release of the Old Scout 10yr Bourbon!
Tasting starts at 7pm, a Welcome Punch will be served at 6:30, so come early and get a good seat in the Jackalope Room.
Attendance will be capped at 35 people, with priority given to paid-up members. First-timers can pay a one-time $15 admittance to get in, come early to get on the list.
