Summer is finally here…which means another Summertramp. Today from noon to 6pm, burning brightly from the sunny shores of downtown LA, Summertramp is back. Featuring the Astroturf covered parking lot, giant waterside, mega slip-n-slide, above ground pool, champagne booze and beer specials and the Summertramp Pizzanista Shack. Also not to mention Aaron Elvis, Casey Alva, Cat NYC, Daisy O’Dell, Timothy Realness and Valida shaking a leg on the dance floor. When “Rum Bar” is in the name of your business and a sister venue carries only agave-based spirits it’s easy for your guests to assume you just serve rum. Though we have a fetish for cane, we’re complete degenerates and indulge in every spirit you could possibly thirst for. To illustrate this point, I’d like to suggest a superior single malt for your early summer sipping: Balvenie Caribbean Cask. This fourteen year old scotch from one of the most consistent distillers in whiskey receives secondary aging in a [you guessed it] rum cask.
What does this do to the heathery honeyed finish of Balvenie? It mans it right up. The touch of hogo [rum-speak for that distinct funk that pot-stilled Caribbean rum carries] lends the whiskey a slightly drier finishing note and forces its many layers of flavor to compete for your tongue’s attention. In other words, it’s the good-natured troublemaker within the party in your mouth.
Though I usually prefer my spirits neat, on a hot summer day there’s no finer pursuit than wiling away the afternoon with this fine tipple pooling around a thick cube of ice. Cigar and fishing pole optional but recommended.
