This Thursday is National Hot Buttered Rum Day (yes, there really is a holiday for everything), and it’s your chance to celebrate the colonial beverage which saved 17th century New Englanders from sobriety the cold as several local venues will be doing up drink specials for the occasion. It’s a big deal considering L.A. isn’t really a “hot cocktail” city OR a butter town for that matter. So take advantage and cozy up to one of these nontraditional beauties or, if you don’t feel like venturing out into the 40-degree night, try the traditional recipe we got from 1886 Bar below.
By the way, if rum isn’t your thing, just wait for January 25th when it’s National Irish Coffee Day.
Caña Rum Bar downtown will be serving up an old family recipe, courtesy of bartender Danielle Crouch’s mom. The Mexican-style Hot Buttered Rum—with a kick of chipotle, cacao, and Mexican rum—will be going for $9 all night.
At Cole’s, bartenders Brent Falco and Zahra Bates (formerly of Providence) collaborated on the special of the day, “Cole & Honey,” ($8 happy hour, $11 after) a concoction of brown butter, Appleton 12-year rum, hot water, Allspice Dram milk and honey foam, and grated nutmeg on top.
